The hobo bag: what it is, slouchy or structured, and which handle drop to choose
A hobo bag is a soft shoulder bag with a rounded top that dips slightly in the middle when you carry it. It usually has one handle or strap and closes with a zip. Classic hobos are slouchy and roomy; structured ones keep a cleaner line. Choose by three things: the handle drop (25–30 cm for the shoulder, less for the hand), the width (about 30 cm takes a phone, a wallet and sunglasses) and how much slouch you want.
How to recognize a hobo bag
Look at the top line. On a hobo it curves down between the two ends of the handle, like a crescent or a soft V. The body is soft enough to settle as you carry it, and there is one handle, not two. The name is usually traced to the bundle that travelling workers in early twentieth-century America carried over the shoulder: a soft load hanging from one point.
That sets the hobo apart from other shapes. A tote has an open top and two handles. A crossbody bag hangs across the body on a long strap. A baguette is long, low and flat, worn high under the arm. A hobo is rounder and deeper, carried on the shoulder or in the hand. For all the shapes side by side, see our guide to bag types and sizes.
Slouchy or structured
A slouchy hobo has no stiffening at all. It folds against the body, takes a lot and looks relaxed with knitwear and denim. The price of that ease: small things sink to the bottom, and a half-empty bag looks tired.
A structured hobo keeps the rounded top but holds its body. Firmer leather, a solid lining and a zip keep the shape when the bag is light and keep things in order when it is full. It looks right with a blazer as well as with jeans, so it goes to the office too.
Ours are closer to the second kind. Josefine is a softened rectangle with a V-shaped zip top and a short handle on metal rings. Josy, her younger sister, has the same zip-top idea on an adjustable strap. Debut is a small gathered bag with soft pleats along the top: half hobo, half evening bag.
Handle drop: the number that decides how a hobo sits
The handle drop is the distance from the top of the handle to the top edge of the bag, measured with the handle pulled straight. It tells you where the bag will sit before you try it on.
- Under 15 cm: in the hand or on the wrist. Debut's handle drop is 10 cm.
- About 20–30 cm: in the crook of the arm, and on the shoulder over a shirt or a light knit. Josefine's handle drop is 31 cm; she is carried in the hand or in the crook of the arm.
- A long, adjustable strap: on the shoulder or across the body. Josy's strap is 110 cm and adjusts.
In winter, add a few centimeters. A coat lifts the shoulder line, and a handle that was comfortable over a T-shirt can squeeze under the arm over wool.
Three hobo bags, measured
| Model | Size and weight | How it is carried | What fits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Debut | 25.5 × 9 × 11 cm, 200 g | Short handle, 10 cm: in the hand or on the wrist | Phone, card case, keys, lipstick, a coat-check ticket | €463–500 |
| Josy | 23 × 15 × 9 cm, 400 g | Adjustable strap, 110 cm: on the shoulder or across the body | Phone, wallet or card case, keys, earbuds, lipstick | €400 |
| Josefine | 30 × 20 × 10 cm, 600 g | Short handle on metal rings, 31 cm: in the hand or the crook of the arm | Phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses, lipstick, a small notebook | €430–480 |
All three close: Josefine and Josy with a zip, Debut with a magnet. On a soft bag that matters more than on a tote, because a hobo leans when you set it down.
Which size to choose
Small, under 25 cm wide: an evening or a few hours in town. Phone, cards, keys, lipstick. Debut and Josy are this size.
Medium, about 28–35 cm: the everyday hobo. Josefine is 30 cm wide and 10 cm deep, so next to the phone she takes a wallet and sunglasses in a case, and the zip keeps them in.
Large, 40 cm and more: a weekend or work hobo. We do not make one. If you carry a laptop, a tote works better than any soft bag; we list sizes by laptop in our guide to a laptop bag for women.
Proportion matters too. On a petite frame, a smaller hobo keeps the line light. On a tall frame or over a long coat, a 30 cm bag looks better than a very small one.
How to wear a hobo bag
In the hand or the crook of the arm. This is where a structured hobo looks most composed. Black Josefine with a navy blazer, a white shirt and straight jeans, or over the arm of a trench.
On the shoulder. The classic way for a slouchy hobo: under the arm, close to the body. Josy sits like this on a shortened strap.
Across the body. Only with a long strap. Josy, lengthened, frees both hands for a market, a museum or a trip.
In the evening. Debut on the wrist with a black dress or a gray suit. The gathered top catches the light like a clutch, and you do not have to hold it all evening.
Smooth leather, suede and color
Smooth calfskin is easier for every day and for rain: Josefine in black, brown and Marsala, a deep burgundy; Josy in black. Suede is softer and deeper in color: Josefine in choco and navy blue, Debut in choco, lime, orange and olive. Suede prefers dry days; we cover the care in our guide to the suede bag.
