A clutch for a wedding, New Year’s Eve and carnival season: what fits and how to choose
You choose a clutch for a wedding or New Year’s Eve by two things: what needs to fit inside and whether you want your hands free. For a phone, keys, a lipstick and powder, a slim clutch carried in the hand is enough. If the evening starts straight from work, take a large clutch that also holds a wallet and a make-up bag. For dancing, a small shoulder or crossbody bag is easier. Black goes with any dress; brown and burgundy go with warm colors.

What needs to fit
Before you choose, put on the table what you will take: your phone, keys, a card case, a lipstick, powder, perhaps sunglasses and a cloakroom ticket. A large smartphone is about 16 × 7.5 cm, so it usually decides the size.

Elza is a large, soft envelope with a folded top: 43 × 25 × 15 cm unfolded, lower when folded. It has a magnetic closure and two inner pockets, one with a zip. Satisfaction is long and slim, designed for flat things, so it doesn’t bulge. Debut is a small gathered bag with one short handle that you slip over your wrist.
A clutch for a wedding
A wedding is a long day: the ceremony, dinner, dancing until morning. The clutch should hold your phone, lipstick, powder and keys, ideally also tissues and something for a headache. If you are coming straight from work or staying overnight, choose Elza: it also takes a wallet and a make-up bag.
For the evening alone, Satisfaction or Debut is enough. The red patent Satisfaction is the accent of the outfit, so it looks best with black, white, grey or navy. Debut in choco suede is calmer and goes with cream, camel and black.
For dancing, leave the clutch on the table or choose a bag you wear: Britni on the shoulder or Sophie Small across the body.
A black or a brown clutch
Black goes with any dress or suit, from black to pastels. Elza comes in black smooth leather; Britni and Sophie Small come in black too.
Brown looks better with warm colors: cream, beige, bottle green, gold. Elza comes in brown, walnut and caramel suede.
Burgundy and red are an accent for a winter wedding or a carnival ball. Elza comes in marsala and red, and Satisfaction in red patent leather.

For New Year’s Eve and carnival season
New Year’s Eve means crowds, a coat in the cloakroom and often dancing, so free hands matter. Britni lies flat on the shoulder, Sophie Small goes across the body and Debut slips over the wrist. All three fit under a coat.
For a carnival ball, where the dress plays the lead, choose a clutch in the same color as your shoes, or in black. If the outfit is simple, the red Elza or the patent Satisfaction can be the accent.
Patent and smooth leather look good under artificial light. Suede is matte and soft and goes better with velvet and wool. If you walk to the party in wet snow, keep a suede clutch under your coat.
Leather, patent or suede: care after the party
Smooth leather: wipe it with a dry, soft cloth and keep it away from cosmetics.
Patent leather: wipe it with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water and dry it right away. Keep it away from heat, perfume and hand cream. Patent can absorb dye, so don’t leave it against dark fabrics.
Suede: clean it with a soft brush in the direction of the nap and remove marks with a dry suede eraser, not water. There is more in our guide leather or suede.
Store every clutch in its dust bag, with paper inside.
